On this episode:Dr. Malaspina discusses depression(its symptoms, treatment and other helpful information) Dolores Malaspina MD, MPH, is an expert psychiatrist, accomplished research scientist and award winning educator of physicians, trainees and the general public. Her broad approach to mental health issues is influenced by her advanced training in zoology and epidemiology, in addition to medicine and psychiatry. Her talent to convey complex and often misunderstood concepts to the general public has led to many awards and numerous speaking engagements and media appearances. She is the host of a weekly two hour radio show called "The Psychiatry Show" on the Sirius/XM satellite radio channel 81 for "Doctor Radio". The National Institute of Health (NIH) has continuously funded her research to identify risk factors and protective pathways for mental health for the last 25 years. Dr. Malaspina is also well known as a mentor who is training a new generation of psychiatric research scientists. She is also a member of the group that is redefining the criteria for making psychiatric diagnoses, called the DSM V. At New York University School of Medicine, she is the “Anita and Joseph Steckler Professor of Psychiatry” and a former chairman of the NYU Bellevue Department of Psychiatry. She was previously Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Columbia University, where she served for 22 years. She now is the Executive Director of InSPIRES, an institute for Social and Psychiatric Initiatives at the NYU Medical Center which is focused on preventing and curing severe mental disorders.
